A Brief History of Longmont

Longmont was founded in 1871 by members of the "Chicago Colorado Colony" who settled in the St. Vrain Valley. An expedition headed by Major Stephen H. Long explored the valley in 1820. Longmont's name is a combination of "Long" from Long's Peak and "mont" from the French word for mountain.

The Town of Longmont was incorporated January 7, 1873, and is now governed by a council-manager form of government under a home rule City charter adopted August 8, 1961. There are seven City Council members, including the Mayor.
