CLUB NEWS & EVENTS

Branch Manager Levi Brown provided the club with a comprehensive update on the Vance Brand Airport, situated in Longmont. Named after former NASA astronaut Vance Brand, who hails from Longmont, this city-owned public-use airport is a notable fixture in Colorado's aviation landscape. With a single-runway concrete surface spanning 4,800 by 75 feet across its 261-acre footprint, it stands as a prominent hub for general aviation enthusiasts.

Visitors to the airport are treated to the serene spectacle of planes departing and arriving, complemented by seasonal on-site food trucks that add to the ambiance, particularly during the warmer months.

Levi highlighted the airport's significant role in flight training, along with the anticipated arrival of new environmentally friendly aircraft. "This marks a shift towards quieter and cleaner aviation," Levi noted, drawing attention to the ongoing transition from leaded to unleaded fuel, slated for completion by 2030.

Wrapping up his presentation, Levi extended a cordial invitation to all members to attend the upcoming Air Show scheduled for September 14th at the airport.

Jeff Stahla, who serves as the public information officer at Northern Water, presented an update on the local water projects to the Longmont Rotary Club on Tuesday. Macie May, a journalist from the Longmont Leader, was present during the presentation to report on the event. To read or listen to Jeff's presentation, click on the provided LINK. A big thank you to Jeff for his informative presentation and to Macie for providing valuable community press coverage.

Longmont Rotary Club presented checks to two local organizations at our club meeting on January 23rd.
Sue Bolton and Debbie Setlock thanked the club for their support in this fundraiser called, Cycle to Serve. Rise Against Suicide was the benefactor and Jenna Chinchard, Executive Director was present to receive a check for $2,330.00.  Club members and friends supported Sue and Debbie on their 50 mile ride.  Additionally, the club hosted a local walk and cycle challenge.

The club also presented a check through the monthly Fishbowl fundraiser to The Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center in the amount of $475.00.  Each month a different local non-profit is selected.
If you would like to suggest a local non-profit for a future Fishbowl, please contact the Fishbowl Committee Chair, Sue Bolton.

During a recent Longmont Rotary meeting, club Rotarian Edwina Salazar shared her newfound love for storytelling. She is passionate about bringing stories to life and engaging Longmont elementary students with her tales.
Khwai Village, situated on the banks of the Khwai River in northwest Botswana, hosts a population of approximately 400 people near the borders of Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The hunter/gatherer culture of Khwai Village, so typical of this region of Botswana, has not traditionally engaged in crop or vegetable cultivation. The introduction of horticulture and gardening education within the village’s only pre-school/elementary school and the establishment of essential infrastructure (water source, distribution and storage, proper soil, seeds, and tools) aims to foster better nutrition and health for the population which was long a desire of village leadership. Historically reliant on imported crops, the new “Teaching” garden provides a space for local children to learn about growing/cultivation of plants as well as serving to inspire parents and adults to realize the possibility and importance of freshly grown vegetables to their diet.
Summary Report of the 2023 Winter Warmth Coat Drive:   The Longmont Rotary Winter Warmth Coat Drive completed its 32nd year hosting this annual event.  This year's six week drive had 20 drop-off locations throughout the community.  Club members maintain the bins, new coats were purchased and sorting events held to arrange and prepare for a distribution event held at the OUR Center.  This year, at the December 3rd Distribution event, we served 131 families, providing new or gently used coats to identified clients and family.  The Longmont Rotary Charity Fund provided funds to buy new coats and gift cards.  This year we had very few coats left and those who still needed coats were accommodated through the gift cards that the club donated.  It took 65+ Rotarians to make it happen this year.  A big thank you to our club and the OUR Center for partnering with us.  A BIG THANK YOU to our drop off sites, club members and friends for making year 32 a success!!

Debby Paris and Bryan Baum extended a big thank you to Rotarians who rang the Salvation Army bells at King Soopers this past holiday season.  Debby shared the following results: Longmont Rotary raised $10,623 through 102 hours of ringing this year.   We also had some star bell ringers, signing up 4 times (Tim Waters) and 5 times (John Eastman).  Wow!     Bryan mentioned the Salvation Army Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast, which will be held at the OUR Center on Saturday, January 20th at 8 am.

Ann Brandenburg, the Longmont Salvation Army Kettle Coordinator, wrote this thank you....
"I sincerely appreciate Rotary's enthusiasm for Salvation Army.  I won't forget your energy and commitment in getting 3 additional days at the Hover King Soopers immediately following Thanksgiving!  Also, I am thankful for your efforts in bringing in the Young Rotarians to ring!"
